The Challenge
An older adult with early cognitive issues was preparing to downsize and move into a new home. His son, who lived across the country, wanted to be closely involved in every step of the move but could rarely be there in person. Both father and son needed a clear, reliable way to stay connected, review belongings, and make decisions together about what would move, what would be shared, and what would be let go.
Does this sound like your situation?
The Approach
We created a personalized plan to keep both father and son fully engaged from start to finish. First, we developed an initial downsizing plan that outlined priorities and limits based on the new space. During each in-person session with the father, we carefully sorted belongings, then followed up with the son through scheduled phone calls and detailed email updates so he could weigh in from afar.
To make asset decisions easier, we used an inventory platform that allowed the family to view items remotely and decide how to divide them. This proactive, transparent communication helped us anticipate and resolve potential concerns early, especially around how many belongings could comfortably fit in the new home.
The Result
The client was successfully downsized, packed, moved, unpacked, and settled into his new home with minimal stress. The son remained fully engaged throughout the process despite the distance, and the inventory system provided a clear, fair way for the family to divide household contents. In the end, the father made confident decisions about what to keep, and the family felt the transition had been handled thoughtfully and respectfully for everyone involved.
